Alex Fontaine-in love with Dimity, Sally's sister, but is forced to marry Sally after most of the family dies off to keep gossip at bay.
Tony Fontaine-fled to Texas in April of 1866, after allegedly knifing Jonas Wilkerson to death.

  1. The Munroe plantation name is never given, but they are from “near Lovejoy” (chapter 28), which is about 10 miles away (chapter 6).

  3. I have always thought that Cathleen Calvert could have played a larger role in the novel. I love these minor characters who add such depth and variety. In spite of the social whirl the characters live in before and after the war, no one seems to have many close friends, not even Melanie.
